Answers about colours, sizes, delivery, returns and film requests.
The poster
What is a moviestripes poster?
A poster that shows a film's colours across its whole running time. We analyse the film frame by frame and turn it into a graphic, such as a barcode of stripes, rings or colour layers. Title, year and running time are added, plus your own text if you like. It is not a film poster but a portrait of the film in colour.
How are the colours on the poster made?
We divide the film into very short slices of time and work out the dominant colours of each. We deliberately do not use a plain average, because that turns brown-grey for almost every film. Instead we adjust brightness and saturation so the film's character is kept. We trim opening logos and end credits so there are no black or grey blocks at the edges.
Which designs are there?
For single films: classic barcode, sediment and coloured soundwave. For group posters of two to eight films: stacked barcodes, rings and ridgelines. Each design comes in a light and a dark theme. The Designs page shows them side by side.
Light or dark: which is better?
Light posters on warm off-white look calm and fit almost any home. Dark posters make colours glow and suit dark films that quickly look brown on light paper. The preview in the configurator shows both, and we suggest one for each film. Dark backgrounds can print a little softer on matte paper than they look on screen.
Which sizes are available?
Three formats: 30×40 cm, 50×70 cm and 60×80 cm, all portrait. These are common frame sizes, so you can easily find a frame elsewhere too. Prices (final prices): single film €24, €32 and €42. Group poster €34, €42 and €52. Shipping is added.
What paper are the posters printed on?
We print on matte poster paper at high resolution (300 dpi), with a warm off-white background on the light posters. We will give details of paper weight and printing method here once our print partner is confirmed. [To be confirmed before launch.]
Do you offer frames?
Yes, in black or white. The surcharge is €25 (30×40), €45 (50×70) and €55 (60×80). The poster then arrives framed and ready to hang. Without a frame we send the poster in sturdy packaging so nothing creases.
Why does the image say “Preview” and show a watermark?
Images in the shop are low-resolution previews with a subtle watermark. Your printed poster has no watermark and no “Preview” mark, and is in full print resolution.
How good is the print quality?
Yes. Every poster is rendered at 300 dpi with 3 mm bleed and a safe area for the text. The stripes are sharp and stay sharp at the large 60×80 cm format. The fine lines you see in the preview are not a compression artefact, they are the film.
Which design suits my film?
For films with clear colour changes, such as Amélie or The Grand Budapest Hotel, the classic or sediment work well. For loud films, such as music films, the soundwave. For group posters, rings is our favourite and stacked barcodes the clearest. In the configurator we suggest a design for each film.
Personalising and gifts
What can I personalise?
You choose the films (one, or two to eight), the design, light or dark, the size and optionally a frame. You can also write the title and subtitle yourself, for example “Our Film Nights” and “since 2019”. For group posters that is the heart of the idea. In the configurator you see every change in the preview straight away.
Can I put two or more films on one poster?
Yes. A group poster can hold two to eight films, as stacked barcodes, rings or ridgelines. That makes a gift for couples, families and groups of friends: your film nights on one sheet. With a title and a date it becomes personal.
My film is not in the catalogue. What now?
Use “Request a film” to give us the title (and the year if there are several). We usually create the colour data within 48 hours and email you as soon as you can configure your poster. It costs nothing extra and you are under no obligation to buy.
Can I ship the poster straight to the recipient?
Yes, you can enter a different delivery address during checkout. We will leave the invoice out of the parcel if you ask; just note it in the comment field. [Feature to be confirmed.]
Delivery
How long does delivery take?
Usually 3 to 6 working days from your order, because each poster is printed fresh to your configuration. For requested films that are not in the catalogue yet, add up to 48 hours for creating them. You see the delivery estimate before ordering. [Delivery times to be confirmed; depends on the print partner.]
What does shipping cost?
Within Germany €4.90, free on orders from €80. At launch we deliver to Germany only. Austria and other countries are planned for later.
When do I need to order for Christmas?
The Christmas order deadline is expected in early December. We will publish the exact date here as soon as it is fixed. Our tip: order as early as you can.
Payment and returns
Can I return the poster?
That depends on whether you personalised it. Posters with your own title or subtitle or a film selection you put together yourself are made to your specification and excluded from the right of withdrawal (§ 312g (2) no. 1 BGB). Posters without your own details can be withdrawn within 14 days of receipt; you bear the return shipping cost. The cart shows for each poster which rule applies. If your poster arrives damaged or misprinted, please contact us within a few days with a photo and we will replace it free of charge. The binding rules are in our terms and the withdrawal notice.
Which payment methods are available?
At launch we expect to offer credit card, PayPal, Klarna, Apple Pay and Google Pay. The final selection is confirmed at shop launch and listed on the Shipping & Payment page. [Payment methods not final yet.]
Are film titles allowed on the poster?
We set title, year and running time as plain text in our own typeface. There are no logos, no original lettering and no scenes from the film. The poster shows colours, not footage. The trademark and film rights of the rights holders remain untouched.
